Bowls for Kids' Sake 2010 FAQs

Here are a few of those more common Bowl For Kids' Sake questions. If you can't find the answers here, don't hesitate to give Judi Charman a call at (503) 249.4859.

What is Bowl For Kids’ Sake?

Bowl For Kids’ Sake is our largest annual fundraising event. We equip each team or individual with online tools to effectively reach out to friends and family to raise money to support life-changing friendships.

As a thank you for your fundraising efforts, when your team raises $625, or you individually raise $125, you are invited to one of three fun-filled community bowling parties: February 27 at Big Al’s, March 7 at Grand Central, and Retro Bowl happening March 13 at Hollywood Bowl. At the bowling parties, everyone comes together to celebrate their fundraising success.

What is Big Brothers Big Sisters Columbia Northwest?

Big Brothers Big Sisters Columbia Northwest supports children – affectionately referred to as Little Brothers and Sisters - ages 6-18 by matching them with caring adult volunteer mentors. Big Brothers Big Sisters Columbia Northwest serves Multnomah, Washington, Clark, Clackamas, Skamania, Cowlitz, and Wahkiakum counties.

In the short-term, the results of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program are phenomenal. Children matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister for 18 months are 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs, 52% less likely to skip school, and 33% less likely to hit someone than children who are not matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister.

As it turns out, involvement in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program is even more life changing than once assumed. According to the startling results of a recent groundbreaking study conducted by Harris Interactive, adults mentored as children through Big Brothers Big Sisters are more likely than peers with similar backgrounds but who were not involved in the program to have: a four-year college degree, an income of $75,000 or more, and strong relationships with their spouses, children and friends.

Why are you asking the community to fundraise?

Big Brothers Big Sisters is not only in need of volunteers, the agency needs funds to support volunteers and children – known as matches – to provide life-changing friendships to at-risk children. At Big Brothers Big Sisters each match is professionally supported from day one, each volunteer is fully screened and trained before he/she is matched with a child. After the match is made, professional case managers support the match and assist the volunteer with any issues that may arise. It costs about $1,000 to professionally support a match for one year. It is through this professional match support that Big Brothers Big Sisters is able to achieve significant outcomes.

Why should I participate in Bowl For Kids’ Sake?

Sixteen-year-old Collin would like a Big Brother to go to OMSI, the zoo, and other places he has never been before. Twelve-year-old Drew, who lives in SE Portland, would like a Big Brother so he has a male to look up to and help him get out of his shell. Nine-year-old Josie would like a Big Sister because she is the only girl at home and her mom is usually at work or busy.

By participating in Bowl For Kids’ Sake, you are able to drive the funds needed to support more volunteers, which it turn, allow us to serve more children like Collin, Drew, and Josie.
